Mapleton will be the focus of the
Blackall Range this weekend when the bustling township will celebrate
its existence with two days of interesting and fun filled activities.
The action starts on Saturday morning with a Poet’s Breakfast at The
Old School
House (TOSH) at 17 Obi Obi Road at 8am, with a tasty breakfast and
entertainment for just $10 per person (or come and hear the
entertaining poets for just $5). Breakfast bookings are essential, so
please ring 5478 6624, evenings only.
Maroochy mayor Joe Natoli and his division 1 councillor Greg Rogerson have both given a commitment to organisers that they will attend.
Poets to feature will include John Majors, Renya Hadley and Mark Feldman, while Ian McKay will be up from Kenilworth to emcee the morning. An art competition at The Old School House has attracted keen interest from local artists in four sections: watercolour, oil or acrylic, pastels and mixed media. Prizes for the winners in each section will be presented by Nicklin MP Peter Wellington and Greg Rogerson.
The pretty lily pond beside TOSH will be the setting for some attractive stalls containing arts, crafts, and locally grown produce. At 11.30am, our energetic local volunteer fire fighters will start cooking up a sausage sizzle to tempt everyone. Around 4pm, in the Mapleton Hall, hinterland composer Ralph Tyrrell with his group Indigo Dingo will entertain listeners with songs Ralph has composed about Mapleton’s history and location.
Organiser Valerie Zwart, said she was expecting visitors from throughout the Coast to descend on Mapleton. “No need to bring a cut lunch, as there are several fine restaurants and cafes, plus the historic Mapleton Tavern of course,” Val said. “But with the influx of visitors it may be advisable to book.”
Sunday’s activities will kick off at 8.30am with breakfast followed by barefoot bowls at the Mapleton Bowls Club. “This will be a great event to entertain the whole family and, following the success of young Coast bowler, Kelsey Cottrell, many young people are becoming interested in this great sport,” Val said.
Cost for the morning, including breakfast, is just $12 each ($6 for children under 10) and bowls can be supplied. In the afternoon the well known Mapleton Choir will present their spring concert A World of Song, at the Mapleton Hall starting at 2.30pm.
The varied program will feature a musical journey taking in the British Isles, Italy, Vietnam, North America and the West Indies, then the Pacific Islands and finally home to Australia. Admission is just $15 ($12 concession), which includes afternoon tea. Tickets are available at the door.
