One of Mary Cairncross Scenic
Reserve’s most valuable volunteers has been awarded a special
certificate in recognition of his dedicated service. Kevin Wong last
week accepted the federal government award, arranged through Member for
Fisher Peter Slipper, from three of his workmates from the reserve at a
bedside ceremony in Maleny Hospital where he is seriously ill.
“I don’t deserve it,” was all Kevin could say with typical modesty as the reserves coordinator, Mark Bonner, committee member Greg Wightman and fellow volunteer Andrew Thorburn were on hand to make the presentation.
But his colleagues voice a far different scenario. Mr Wightman said there were few more dedicated servants for the reserve than Kevin Wong. “Kevin has given unstintingly of his time for the past six years, particularly with tree plantings and in addition to that he is a barbeque chef extraordinaire for fundraisers and volunteer functions,” said Mr Wightman.
Mr Bonner said Kevin was an invaluable part of the team of 65 volunteers that give freely of their time to bring the reserve alive to the hundreds of thousands of visitors from both Australia and overseas.
A retired teacher, education consultant and top-level basketball referee who spent many years in New Guinea and Canberra, Kevin and his wife Wanda retired to a lantana covered property in Witta which they transformed into their own nature reserve.
