The intersection of Maple Street
and Coral Streets, Maleny has caused both the Caloundra City Council
and the Department of Main Roads concern for a number of years.
This intersection, which is on the town side of Obi Creek has a number of specific problems for those designing an upgrade to the southern entry into Maleny township.
Not only is it on the northern side of a relatively narrow bridge crossing Obi Creek but it is at the now only entry to Riverside Shopping Centre. This shopping centre is a hub for much of the commercial shopping in Maleny as it contains the Maleny Post Office.
Previously there was an exit lane into Teak Street which assisted in reducing the amount of flow of traffic back into Maple Street from the shopping centre car park. Following the closure of this laneway all traffic into and out from this shopping centre must use the exit at Maple Street and Coral Street.
It has previously been announced by the Queensland Main Roads Department that they would be constructing a traffic round-about at that location to ease traffic congestion and to make the intersection safer.
On the night of Monday November 19th some person has beaten the Main Roads Department by providing a round-about in white paint in the suggested area of the officially suggested round-about.
Official agencies were quick to remove the unofficial round-about early the following morning.
The work of the protester in this instance does show how difficult the design of this round-about is and just how much of the neighbouring Tesch Park will need to be taken to make it trafficable.
Caloundra City Councillor, Dick Newman said ”This is a Main Roads Department Road and the design is quite complex but it has been funded in this year’s budget.”
