Respected ‘elder; of the community and true Maleny icon, Harry Whitehouse, is set to move into the next phase of his long life at the Erowal Aged Care Facility.    Friend and Biolytix marketing manager, Tracey Heers, shares what Harry has meant for this end of the hinterland while promoting a special fundraising night at the Upfront Club next week.

When you swim at glorious Gardeners Falls this summer, spare a thought for Harry Whitehouse, who ensured that the land surrounding Gardeners Falls was donated for the whole community to enjoy, for generations to come.    A much loved Maleny “identity”, Harry has been a part of the Maleny Community for many years and is the licensee (and a loyal supporter), of the Upfront Club – we’re told he may be the oldest licensee in Australia!

Harry may also be the oldest hitchhiker in the business!    You can see him on the side of the road each morning heading for the Upfront Club, where he helps with the accounts each morning.    Harry has a zest for life and a passion for people, fine food and art.    He has seen a lot in his 81 years, including the Second World War, and has a wealth of fascinating tales from around the world, as well as a strong opinion on most things political.    Harry is also something of a comedian and always has a joke, a friendly smile and a warm hug (for the ladies).    Harry’s love for food has blossomed through his later years and many of us have had the pleasure of partaking in one of his dinner parties.

These decadent affairs consist of many courses of fabulous food, prepared lovingly by Harry and have resulted in some very full tummies over the years.    The ever-generous Harry uses the finest of ingredients to delight us while scrimping on his own groceries.    Perhaps this is why the community has responded so enthusiastically to a special fundraiser for this Maleny icon.    Sarah Castaldi, chief organiser of Harry’s fundraiser, said “Every person or business I have asked to donate to the raffle or art auction has very graciously given something for Harry’s night.  They all recognise him as an icon.”

Harry;s fundraiser night will be held at the Upfront Club on Thursday, October 25 at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.    The night promises to be a real hoot with live Maleny music, a fabulous art auction featuring pieces from some of Maleny’s finest artists and lots of merriment.    A series of raffles will also be drawn on the night, with a range of great prizes donated by local businesses.    Tickets are available from today at the front counter at the Upfront Club.    For a sneak preview of the auction pieces you can visit the club, where they will be on display from Tuesday, October23.

Originally from England, Harry arrived in Maleny some 36 years ago and instantly fell in love with the place.    And over the years Maleny has fallen in love with Harry.    Now Harry needs a hand.    Everyone is invited to come along and show some support for one of our town’s most respected community members.
