Wordfood returns to the 2007 Woodford Folk Festival menu with a blender full of fresh word’s & beats. This years Wordfood will also see the first ever team slam between performance and bush poets – its cowboy boots and berets off this year to see who owns the spoken word bragging rights in 2008!
Featuring a nightly residency of Australia’s finest spoken word performers mixing it up live and the Word Food Slam Deluxe - where we give you two minutes & a mike and let you rip up the stage with fresh verses & tight rhymes as you tilt for the title. With a chance for all hot word chefs to slam new recipes into the mike, competing for $1000 cash + a season festival ticket and the right to hold aloft the covete "WordFood Slam Spoon".
Slam is a live spoken word competition created in the 1980's by Marc "So What" Smith in Chicago. Open to all people and all forms of spoken-word - poetry, hip hop, theatre, whatever! - each person slams their words to a live audience among whom 5 are selected to score each poet's work. The audience at a slam has the freedom to express itself in any way they see fit! Each poet entering the slam risks all and needs to give all to the slam and the audience - this is an event for the people!
Every night at the festival performances sizzle with showcases from head chef & QLD’s surrealist performance poet Ghostboy, pop-poetry sisters Maiden Speech, and internationally renowned spoken-word artist Miles Merrill stirring things up on stage with hot dishes such as spoken word midwives Sezsu, Brisbane punk-folk 4 piece Golden Virtues, legendary Irish troubadour and story-teller Andy White as well as the return of our controversial special guest - Crazy Elf! There will also be performance poetry workshops run by WordFood artists.
WordFood Slam heats will explode from your poetry pantry this December with iron chef and Slam MC Ghostboy at the reins! Slam Heats will burn up the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich & at the festival site before the main event: the Word Food Slam Deluxe final on NYE at the Empire!
WordFood Slam Deluxe 2007/8 Heats Brisbane - Wed 12th December 7 - late www.outsiders.ws at Tongue N Groove, 63 Hardgrave Rd West End. Entry $5 (both poets & audience). Note: The Brisbane heat will feature 8 monthly slam winners from the ouTsideRs monthly slams. This is a closed heat with no slam sign up on the night.
Ipswich - Thurs 13th December 6 - 9pm The Barry Jones Auditorium Ipswich Library 40 South St. Entry $5 (for poets in slam only; audience free).
Sunshine Coast - Sat 15th December 4 - 7pm www.outsiders.ws at The White Room @ Nambour Arts Incubator, 80 Howard St Nambour. Entry $5 (for poets in slam only; audience free).
