Coast
radio personality Caroline Hutchinson is a very nice person. That
endorsement does not come form just anyone. It is Sunshine coast
federal MP Peter Slipper’s assessment of his newest opponent.
Ms Hutchinson announced last Thursday that she would run in the upcoming election as an independent against the Liberal member for Fisher , which includes Maleny, Montville, Mooloolah, Eudlo, Witta and Conondale.

Mr Slipper holds the seat with a whopping 12% margin, but national polls have been indicating there is a mood for a change. On hearing the announcement Me Slipper’s response was polite but muted. He said Ms Hutchinson’s decision to stand was a reflection of Australia’s robust democracy. “I don’t take anything for granted and every candidate who enters the field must be treated with respect,” he said. “It is a privilege to represent the electorate of Fisher in the federal parliament and I’ll be continuing to work hard and I will continue to receive the electorate’s support.”
Mr Slipper said he had received positive feedback from Coast residents. He said the state and national opinion polls were not necessarily painting an accurate picture of what was occurring in individual seats. “The feedback I’ve been getting is not the same as you see in the published polls,” he said.
The race for the federal electorate of Fisher just got a lot more interesting with radio personality Caroline Hutchinson joining the field. Ms Hutchinson announced her candidacy last week and farewelled her listeners on Mix FM, preparing to put her shoulder to the wheel and her heart and soul into the campaign. She said she would not be pushing and political ideology with her views falling between the two major parties – or “a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n roll” as she put it. Nor would she be advising her supporters how to direct their preferences. ‘I want people to vote 1 for me and they can direct their preferences wherever they like.” She said. Labor candidate Darrell Main said he too had been receiving plenty of support as he continued campaigning throughout the district. He said he believed Fisher was “shaping up very nicely” for Labor.
Democrats candidate Carolyn Kerr said she was delighted that Ms Hutchinson put her hand up. Ms Kerr’s campaign urges voters to “Give Slipper the Boot”.
Greens candidate Dr Matthew Gray, a Queensland University of Technology lecturer, said he did not think it was appropriate to comment on any of the other candidates.
