Federal member for Fisher Peter
Slipper has announced funding of $273,455 for a new visitors
information centre at Glasshouse. Meanwhile he is also fighting for
funds for a viewing platform to be built for the Mary Cairncross Scenic
Reserve, Maleny, to boost tourism promoting recreational activities in
the region.
Mr Slipper said the information caravan used at Glasshouse was no longer suitable for the growing numbers of visitors who dropped in to enquire about the region’s attractions. “Glasshouse is positioned in an ideal location at the gateway to the hinterland as well as the coastal strip and the new visitor’s centre will play a vital role in actively marketing the region’s tourism drawcards,” Mr Slipper said. “Inquiries from visitors are ever increasing and have risen to more than 16,000 in the past 12 months so the current information caravan can no loner adequately fulfil this role.”
The $273,455 from the Australian government will help Caloundra City Council pay for materials and labour for the construction and fitting out of the Visitors’ Information and Interpretive Centre. The regional partnerships program continues the Australian Government’s approach of working with local communities to support their ideas. A total of $261.7 million is available under the Regional Partnerships program from 2007-08 to 2010-11. Communities that wish to seek funding through the program may inquire through the Sunshine Coast Area Consultative Committee on 5479 5099.
