Caloundra
City Council has endorsed a Community and Cultural Master Plan and
Links Plan to guide the planning and development of the community and
cultural facilities in Maleny’s central business area.
Caloundra city Mayor Don Aldous said the growth of Maleny as a significant community and cultural hub had revealed a range of challenges requiring a strategic and coordinated approach. “ The aim of the master plan and links plan is to provide the appropriate framework to assist key stakeholders plan for and create a preferred vision for the local Maleny community,” Cr Aldous said.
Some of the major issues addressed by the master plan and supported by council include:
- Redevelopment of the Maleny Community Centre in it’s existing location
- Establishment of Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in Bicentenary Lane
- Retaining Maleny Library is its existing location, with potential for expansion.
- Redesign and upgrade of Bicentenary Park and Mary Allen Waters Park to increase access and amenity
- Barung Landcare to remain in current location until an acceptable relocation strategy identified
Divisional councillor Dick Newman said council’s role was that of facilitation and to support the local community’s efforts to work with and lobby other levels of government for support and funding. Cr Newman said that the master plan gave the local community organizations a clear vision for the future and provided support for future funding applications.
“This planning process has been initiated by council as a result of the community’s desire to lead the way in shaping the future of the Maleny central business area,” Cr Newman said. “ It has been borne out of an extensive consultation process that has shaped the outcomes and delivered a strategic vision that is innovative, sustainable and shared by the community.”
Cr Newman said council will consider financial support for the redevelopment of the Maleny community Centre along with other community requests for funding and support in the annual financial plan process.
