Margaret Eales-Taylor is the conductor and director for the recently
formed Maleny Singers who will be performing Gilbert and Sullivan
productions in Maleny Show Pavilion this weekend.
Margaret and her husband Derek Taylor MBE relocated to Tamworth, Australia in 1986 and both took up positions at the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music - Derek as director and Margaret as head of singing. She held the position for 17 years. During her tenure she taught a total of 36 students every week and formed two performing groups - one for school age children and the other for adults.
With those two groups Margaret directed 35 operas/operettas. The senior group achieved great success with operas such as Don Giovanni, Madam Butterfly, La Boheme, The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute and operettas Die Fledermaus, Orpheus in the Underworld, La Vie Parisienne, La Belle Helene and Gypsy Princess. But always a favourite with both groups were the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
Margaret?s career began in London when she left the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1963. She was invited to join the D?Oyly Carte Opera Company, which was the famous company formed by Richard D?Oyly Carte in 1881 for the sole purpose of performing Gilbert and Sullivan operas.
Margaret toured with the company for two years, which included a five month tour in the US and Canada and three months in London at the company?s home - The Savoy Theatre. She sang minor soprano roles in all operas and quickly became the principal soprano understudy gaining an intimate knowledge of all but two operas.
Margaret recorded the role of Kate in the Decca recording of The Yeomen of the Guard under the baton of the late Sir Malcolm Sargent. This knowledge of Gilbert and Sullivan has proved invaluable in recent years, as she has directed eight of the 13 operas.
Apart from the forthcoming production of Trial by Jury on July 2 and 3 in Maleny, Margaret is a consultant for the Childers Choral Society where she worked two years ago on their production of The Mikado and this year with her husband Derek on Iolanthe.
On leaving the C?Doyly Carte, Margaret joined the English National Opera Company at The Coliseum, St Martin?s Lane, London where as a principal soprano she sang 25 roles including Musetta, Gilda, First Lady, Pamina, Patience, Eurydice, Metella and many more.
Margaret?s singing career spans 26 years and involved performing in the UK, Canada, US, South Africa, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Australia.
Margaret is now enjoying retirement with her husband in their new Montville home and have made many new friends and love their life on the Range.
