Living within our midst is an artist of such stature that it defies
belief that thus far in Nan Paterson's long life, her work has not been
celebrated locally or nationally. However, the Nan Paterson Survey
showing at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery will publicly recognise
her life and achievements examining an interesting and challenging
artistic career.

Funding was awarded from Arts Queensland and Caloundra RADF to put together a synopsis of Nan's life and work within a 36 page catalogue.
The catalogue has been sent to regional galleries, state galleries and institutions of significance throughout Australia. The interstate reaction has been one of wonder that this artist has remained such a secret.
The survey opened at Baguette Gallery on October 14 and has drawn intense interest from Brisbane curators and collectors. It will move to the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery to be shown from December 14. Nan Paterson is a Queenslander through and through. Born in Mackay, apart from studying in Melbourne and some years in Holland, Nan has spent most of her life in Queensland.

In 1989 Nan moved from Brisbane to Maleny building a home on a bare two acres. Today that two acres is lush and private - surely evocative of the surroundings of her childhood in the tropical north. Her studio is always scented with the intoxication of fresh oil paint, in fact at 82 Nan continues to paint with vigour and passion. The survey features several portraits of well-known local identities including Ian Bryce, Gretel Pickering and the late Joy Roggenkamp.
Surprising for many already familiar with Nan's portraits and still life paintings, will be the Metaphysical works. These are paintings of spiritual depth, powerful images that pose the question of the human condition. Curators and collectors from over the years are anticipating an overdue sharp rise in commercial interest for Nan's work.
Her primary dealers in this region - Art on Cairncross' Jane Carraffi and Tony Gill said while some secrets are best kept, the secret of Nan Paterson should be published far and wide to allow Queensland and Australia to be rightly proud and enjoy her stunning works of art. "We encourage everyone to view this exhibition to experience real art achieved through classical training and a creative mind," Jane and Tony said.
The exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery runs from Wednesday December 14 to Sunday January 29. For enquiries phone the gallery on 5420 8299.
