In
case you have been unable to get a copy of The Range News for the past
couple of weeks, you may not know that The Drum columnist Michael Berry
had both his legs amputated below the knees recently due to a rare and
extremely painful disease called rheumatoid vasculitis.
The community has responded with overwhelming support with offers to help in whatever way they can and the idea of an art auction was born following the donation of a beautiful nude study drawing by Nan Paterson - who was eager to see some funds raised to assist in the very major adjustments now needed in many aspects of Michael?s life.

This generous idea was swiftly transformed into the reality of an event, as Blackall Range artists came forward to donate artworks. So much so, that it soon became apparent that another event would have to be planned as it was not possible to include all the works in one auction. But more about that in weeks to come.
The Afternoon Tea Art Auction is to be held this Sunday December 18 in the Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street. Doors will open at 3.30 m and the $5 entry fee will include a complimentary glass of champagne, afternoon tea and a ticket into the lucky door prize ? a basket of goodies donated by local musician Tony O?Connor.
The auction includes 20 lots in total comprising of the following (in alphabetical order) - Rex Backhaus-Smith watercolour Boab Pool, Susan Bowers etching Links to the Hereafter, Pat Cale mixed media Travelling II, Johanna De Maine porcelain and gold lustre lidded box Oriental Butterflies, Wim de Vos oil Dawn, Four Mile Beach, James Fearnley watercolour Wineglass Bay, Tasmania, Lynne Fellowes box assemblage Little Rituals, Shannon Garson porcelain bowl and jug set Poppies, Donald Greenfield ink cartoon (previously printed in The Range News) called Honk If ..., Peter Hudson oil Coochin Creek, Glasshouse Mountains, Marc Kalifa hand blown glass Cylinder Vase, Judith Laws mixed media on paper Coastal Living, a Craig Medson drawing, Gary Myers acrylic Barnyard Brawl II, Adele Outteridge paper sculpture in perspex Red Centre, Kevin Oxley coloured pencil Blackall Range, Nan Paterson charcoal Astrid, David Paulson graphite Toni, an Andrew Sibley piece, and John Waldron oil North Barnard Islands.
This is an impressive list of art and from renowned creative people, most of whom have a very personal reason for wishing to help Michael and his wife Faith.
Many are repaying the support they have been shown for their careers from the times Hooper Falls was a teaching venue for artists to hold workshops, or from when Michael and Faith held a Brisbane exhibition to highlight the talents of seven Range artists, or from the media exposure gained whenever possible.
Art is a genuine passion for Michael and Faith and they have been as overwhelmed by the response with donations for the auction, as have the organisers. A preview has been sent out to many collectors and already there are booked bids for some pieces.
It is hoped that the calibre of artwork will ensure a commensurate return in the bidding and reassure artists that their generosity has been worthwhile and recognised.
Most of all it is hoped that these funds will go a long way towards the expensive requirements of home adaptations, prosthetic legs and endless other expenses arising from this situation and therefore attain the aim of doing whatever can be done to support Michael and Faith.
