Punters bet up big on Melbourne Cup Day with new Maleny Hotel publican Adrian Seaton leading the way in the winners? circle.
A large crowd bet a record amount at the Maleny Pub TAB. And Adrian
was one of a syndicate that won first prize in the Melbourne Cup
Auction after securing the nowlegendary Makybe Diva for $1050. The
syndicate won over $4000.
Second prize went to Baz Crain and his mates who won a couple of hundred dollars each. Makybe Diva won the 145th running of the $5.1 million Melbourne Cup, becoming the first three-time winner of Australia?s premier race.
Maybe the beer and good fortune had something to do with it, but Adrian reckons he's found his little piece of heaven in Maleny.
Photo Right: Winning smiles ... new publican Adrian Seaton and TAB manager Bas Crain bought wisely at the auction.
Adrian said his new town was a pleasant change to what he was used to. "Maleny is terrific," he said. "The people have shown me the best kindness since I've been here. I've been to some pretty tough places in my time. Mt Isa was the last. I think I've died and gone to heaven here. If they keep treating me like this I'll never leave."
The Maleny Hotel's focus was on raising money for charity. Baz Crain said amid the excitement the hotel managed to raise $1250 for the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. "It was a big crowd," Baz said. "It was monstrous - a new record for turnover at the TAB."

"Each year it's getting bigger and better," Adrian said. "Next year we hope to raise more than $2000 for the hospital.
Bas Crain has been working his heart out for six weeks. He's been a tireless worker. The Calcutta was very successful. Dr Bernie Spilsbury was spotter and Paul Dingle was auctioneer. They were like Roy and HG. It was hilarious.
We also had a well patronised function for Breast Cancer Research today (Tuesday) which include a 15 minute talk, Fashions in the Field and prizes for best dressed and best hat. We raised more than $300 for breast cancer research. It all helps. They're not overly flushed with money.
Whatever we can do here to help we will."
