The Maleny Chamber of Commerce is planning to make up for lost ground
with a sensational Christmas Street Carnival on Friday night December
16. The popular carnival was not held last year, due to insurance
concerns, but the Chamber has decided to take the lead due to public
demand.
President Rod Thamm said the carnival heralded the start of the festive season and brought together the business community, arts community, service clubs, residents and families in an uplifting celebration. "This is the first time the Chamber has organised the carnival," Rod said. "We decided to take it on because our members wanted it. I spoke to a lot of businesses and the one thing most people were asking for was to resurrect the Christmas Carnival. It was interesting that it was the thing that was asked for most by the businesses. It surprised me a little. Anyhow, here we are. "The Street Carnival adds to the positive atmosphere in the community. It unites the town and helps makes Maleny a nice place to live."
The chamber has organised food stalls in the street, face painting, rides and street performers, and Santa will be arriving in a fire engine. Australia Zoo will be visiting and radio station Radio 101.1 will send its promotion cars. The IGA fireworks demonstration takes place at 7pm. Rod thanked Advanced Alarms who were providing security for the night at no charge.
Entertainment director Daniel Wilson has lined up a talented group of performers. They include the Obi Abata African Big Band, Sweet Chilli, Silver Beat, Rhythmic Voices, Maleny Hug Patrol, Maleny Tango Dancers, Maleny Gypsy Dancers, Australia Zoo, and the Maleny Uniting Church Choir.
"Our aim is to bring more excitement to the street," Daniel said. "You should be able to walk from the bottom to the top of town and everywhere you go there will be something happening." "Because it hasn't been held for a couple of years we're keen to make it great this year to get the families and kids along. There'll be a carnival atmosphere and lots of pizzazz."
Rod said he had called on help from Lions, Rotary, Apex and Quota to help ensure success this year. Road blocks will be set up from 5pm to 10pm as Maleny takes control of its street. Daniel is calling for acts for a Amcal Chemist Maleny Idol contest with prize money on offer.
"We need contestants,'' he said. "But they must register. Please call me (5499 9960) because limited spots are available. Of course, sponsors and volunteers are also welcome to contact me.
