Take care at the money tree
Written by Les Fawkes

The winding roads in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are among the most favoured by weekend motor cycle riders.   Because of their very nature they are exciting to ride.   They also add statistics to the road toll and as a result have been recently targeted by police from the Sunshine Coast district traffic branch officers and staff from the state traffic task-force in an attempt to lower the Coast road toll.

Recently a traffic operation was conducted on Stanley River Road, at Maleny, following a spate of crashes in the area.   Superintendent Ben Hanbidge of the Sunshine Coast Police District warned it would not be the last, so who knows the next place to be targeted might well be the “well known money tree”!

The operations target speeding and drink-driving.   The operations include  an unmarked police vehicle to catch motorists breaking road rules outside of the marked operation area.

Coast-based Queensland Motorcycle School owner Glen Patten said hinterland routes such as the Stanley River Road and Conondale Range Road were exciting but potentially dangerous for riders.

"That's where a lot of guys go if they're going to go out and be silly," he said.

“In the recent operation in Stanley River Road police issued 22 speeding tickets and arrested one person for driving under the influence of liquor” Supt Hanbidge said.  He continued “Some of the driving conduct witnessed by police was very ordinary to say the least so this type of operation will not be the last in the Maleny area.”

This is a good time to take note.

P.S.  On Sunday August 3rd three motorcycles collided at the corner of Witta Road and Maleny-Kenilworth Road, about 7km north of Maleny.

Police said none of the riders received life-threatening injuries, but two of them were taken to Caloundra Hospital with arm and collarbone injuries.

This will ensure that any further traffic enforcement action will be taken sooner rather than later.   We at the "Grapevine" still recommend that you take care at "the money tree".
