Council charges are set to continue to rise
Written by Les Fawkes

Before the ink was even dry on the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s first budget the figures were dealt another blow.

This resulted from the recent take over of bulk water infastructure by the State Government.   The Bligh State Government took back 6 million dollars that had been paid as compensation for the asset grab.

“That’s not the end of the bad news for Sunshine Coast residents, “ says Mayor Bob Abbot.   “By the end of 2012 charges from the state controlled BWSA will have doubled from current levels,” he said.   This follows advice from the Deputy Premier that the blk price of water from the State’s Bulk Water Authority will increase by another 21% on July 1st 2009.

"Not only did we lose our own water security, we’ve doubled the price of our water in the initial stages, in the first year – now that will increase even more because we have to find money out of rates to pay for this in the future and the price will double again in the following couple of years.

“That’s stated from the premier. “Next year water will just go up another 20% and another 20% after that and another 20% after that.”

Mayor Abbot said, “There can be no hiding from the fact that the state water reforms will clearly result in substantial increases in water prices in the next 10 years.”

“The State Government is hiding behind local councils when it comes to paying for new infastructure.” said Mayor Abbot.
